How to Treat Your Back Pain | Duke Health

Duke Health interventional pain and spine specialist Dr. Jay Kumar, MD, and nurse practitioner Melanie Ellers discuss back pain, both the kind of back pain that radiates (radicular) and pain that stays in one place (axial). Kumar and Ellers talk about some common nonsurgical treatments, like physical therapy, medications, procedures like spine injections, and newer neuromodulation options like peripheral nerve stimulators and spinal cord stimulators. According to Kumar and Ellers, back pain care is changing from a “band-aid” approach that covers up the pain to finding and addressing the source of the pain. At Duke, our goal is to help you improve day-to-day function with less pain so you can get back to doing the things you love.
