Epilepsy Surgery Options | Duke Health

In about one-third of people with epilepsy, medications alone are not able to adequately control seizures. This is called refractory epilepsy or intractable epilepsy. Seeking care from an epileptologist – a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy – at an established epilepsy center like Duke Health can open additional treatment options to you, like epilepsy surgery. Dr. Birgit Frauscher, MD, and Dr. Derek Southwell, MD, PhD discus traditional surgical options and newer, less-invasive options like laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) and neuromodulation devices like deep brain stimulators that could help reduce your seizure frequency, and maybe eliminate your seizures altogether.
