Treatment for Essential Tremor

Duke Raleigh Hospital now offers patients access to deep brain stimulation – a neurosurgical procedure that involves implanting small wires (electrodes) into the brain.

These electrodes are connected to a small pacemaker-like device in the chest. This device in turn produces electrical impulses that pass through the electrodes and affect brain activity.

Deep brain stimulation is used to treat a variety of medical conditions including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, essential tremor, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Wake County resident Mary recently underwent this procedure at Duke Raleigh Hospital for her essential tremor. Thanks to this device, her tremors are markedly improved allowing her to once again write, use a fork and knife, and drink from a cup.
