The ARMENIA AZERBAIJAN Peace Agreement over NAGORNO-KARABAKH

On 9 November 2020, Russia brokered a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, thus ending a six-week war between the two countries over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. But what exactly does the agreement say? And what does it mean for the future?

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. On this channel, I take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

In 1992, the predominately Armenian-inhabited region of Nagorno-Karabakh, located in the south west of Azerbaijan, declared independence, sparking a major war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. At the end of the conflict, Armenia emerged victorious, having taken control of most of Nagorno-Karabakh and a number of surrounding districts. Despite efforts to reach a negotiated settlement, in recent years there has been a growing fear that the two countries would return to war, especially as Azerbaijan had dramatically increased its defence spending. On 27 September, these fears were realised. However, despite predictions of a long and protracted conflict, the war was over within six-weeks. So, how did it end so quickly? What exactly were the terms of the settlement? And who emerged as the main winners and losers? More to the point, is the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute really over?
