STORYLINE:

British forces stormed into Basra on Sunday, destroying the Ba'ath Party there and pounding the headquarters of a militia loyal to President Saddam Hussein.

Three British soldiers were killed in the fighting.

A column of more than 40 armoured personnel carriers and tanks plowed deep into the city, where British forces and
Iraqi fighters have waged exhaustive battles for control since the war began.

The 7th Armoured Brigade launched an attack from the west and battled their way toward the city centre, killing an
unknown number of paramilitary fighters and taking others prisoner.

The brigade, known as "Desert Rats" were joined by elements of 3 Armoured Brigade that had come up from the south and were on the edge of the old city of Basra.

It was the deepest British forces have moved into the southern city, Iraq's second largest with a population of
1.3 million. Previously, British forces have remained on the outskirts of town and staged raids and incursions from
those positions.

British forces faced some resistance, but were able to move freely in the city.

People were seen moving furniture out of the Ba'ath Party headquarters, but it was not clear whether they were
members or looters.

The incursion came a day after coalition aircraft bombed a compound in Basra belonging to Saddam's notorious cousin General Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali".
