STORYLINE:
US soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division patrolled the streets of a Baghdad suburb this week, conducting joint security operations with the local Iraqi military.
1st Lieutenant Lee Small, who led the patrol in the Tunis area, said it was aimed at showing a presence on the ground and taking a chance to "interact with the locals".
The patrol was uneventful.
Patrols like this one have become a regular occurrence since the February 14 start of an intensified security crackdown in the capital.
Routine operations include the stopping and searching of cars and checking the identity of pedestrians.
At a jointly set up vehicle checkpoint on Route Dover in the Adhamiyah district, US personnel were seen working closely with Iraqi troops.
Iraqi troops directed traffic, picked out cars for further searching and inspected drivers' documents.
The route is a major traffic route into the city, and the main road connecting Baghdad to Baqouba.
A US intelligence Officer said that suicide bombings in the area have gone down significantly since the deployment of 82nd Airborne Division.
