STORYLINE:
United States (US) soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division seized Saddam International Airport, 15 kilometres (nine miles) from downtown Baghdad on Friday, and said they are renaming it Baghdad International Airport.
APTN footage showed US soldiers fighting Iraqi units in the airport area on Friday.
The combat footage shows a US soldiers firing a missile towards Iraqi positions as well as captured Iraqis.
The seizure of the airport is a crucial step in the bid to establish a base of operations for coalition forces just outside the Iraqi capital.
Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, in a news conference in Baghdad on Friday, said the Iraqis would annihilate American forces at Saddam International Airport.
He said Iraqi forces had surrounded coalition units and cut them off from other units near the city.
