(24 Jul 2015) THE NUNS OF NEW SKETE START THE MORNING WITH PRAYERS.
AFTERWARD, THEY THROW SOMETHING ELSE INTO THE MIX.
THE NUNS MAKE CHEESECAKES – HUNDREDS OF THEM.
FLAVORS RANGING FROM CHOCOLATE, KEY LIME, EVEN KAHLUA.
OF COURSE THEY CONSIDER THEIR DESSERTS HEAVENLY.
SOUNDBITE (English), Sister Patricia Lawless, New Skete Monasteries:
"We've tasted all our competitors and find out that we like our own best."
THE SALES HELP THE HANDFUL OF NUNS SUSTAIN THE CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE THEY CARVED OUT FOR THEMSELVES IN UPSTATE NEW YORK.
THEY CAN MAKE 220 CHEESECAKES A DAY, WITH HELP FROM A FEW HIRED WORKERS.
IT STARTED IN THE MID '70S WITH ONE NUN BAKING FOR LOCAL RESTAURANTS.
TODAY, THEY HAVE A BUSTLING ONLINE BUSINESS.
SOME CHEESECAKES GO TO LOCAL STORES WHERE PEOPLE PAY $40 OR MORE FOR THE PREMIUM PRODUCT.
SOUNDBITE (English) Christine McCarroll, Co-owner of Delmar Marketplace:
"Good for holidays and graduation parties this time of year, it's been going well. They have a couple of new flavors."
THE BAKING NUNS ARE AMONG MANY RELIGIOUS ORDERS RASING MONEY THROUGH THE SALE OF PRODUCTS RANGING FROM JAMS TO CARDS TO FRUITCAKE.
SOUNDBITE (English) Sister Cecelia Harvey, New Skete Monasteries:
"A lot of people don't consider cheesecakes very religious even though it might make them think heaven is 20 times better than eating this cheesecake, if that's possible."
THE NUNS BAKE ONE OR TWO DAYS A WEEK, DEPENDING ON THE SEASON.
A TASTY INGREDIENT TO A BLESSED LIFE.
