15. SOUNDBITE: (English) US Colonel (name unavailable - appears to be "Sanderson" on helmet) US 3rd Infantry:
"We had first contact last night after the shamal (check spelling) lifted. They obviously did not know that we were here. They started down the road and the truck turned off its lights, turned on its lights, continued to creep to contact. And we engaged and destroyed them, and they jumped out the back and continued to fight. So they are a very, very interesting bunch."

"They attempted to blow up the bridge which was moderately successful, but we have still been able to use it and in the 48 hours since these guys have been in constant contact. Mostly dismounted soldiers mixed with paramilitary, some military, some with uniform, some not, in pickup trucks, in dump trucks, some in military vehicles, attempting to run roadblocks, infiltrate in and around positions. It has been virtually constant contact for the past 48 hours."

STORYLINE:
Troops from the 269 batallion of the US 3rd Infantry Division have been engaged in fierce fire fights in the town of Kifl, just north of Najaf in recent days.
According to the company commander 60-70 Iraqi soldiers have been killed in the fighting and more than ten vehicles destroyed.
An American colonel with the division said the US forces had first contact with Iraqi soldiers after a sandstorm lifted.
He said the Iraqis seemed to be unaware they had taken up position.
US Colonel Will Grimsley said that Iraqi forces tried to blow up a bridge in town, with some success, but that US troops were still able to use it.
Colonel Grimsley said Iraqi troops - some wearing military uniform and some not - had been engaging the American force almost continuously for about 48 hours.
