STORYLINE:
Two marines were wounded with shrapnel injuries on Wednesday morning on the northern side of Fallujah when their Abrams tank was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG).
One was carried away on a stretcher, but the other marine''s injuries appeared minor.
Fighting this week has left 35 Americans and at least 459 Iraqis dead.
This includes more than 280 Iraqis killed since the Marines'' siege against insurgents in Fallujah, west of Baghdad, began early Monday said Taher Al-Issawi, the director of the city''s hospital.
US Marines backed by airstrikes fought insurgents for the second day around a mosque in the Sunni Muslim stronghold of Fallujah.
Marines are occupying several buildings inside the northern end of the city from where they intend to stage further operations.
Just north of Fallujah a bridge that Marines have been controlling since Sunday April 4 came under insurgent attack on Wednesday morning.
The firefight lasted at least 15 minutes and it appears that the bridge is again under full US control.
Capping Wednesday''s battle, a US Cobra helicopter fired a missile at the base of the mosque''s minaret, and an F-16 dropped a laser-guided bomb at the wall, allowing Marines to move in and seize the site, Lieutenant Colonel Brennan Byrne said.
Military commanders in Iraq said a large number were insurgents were killed in the battle.
