Goni (#RollyPH) Nearing the Philippines as a Category 5 Super Typhoon

Super Typhoon Goni (Philippine name Rolly) remains a very powerful storm this morning with maximum winds of 185mph/300kph, and will continue to approach the Philippines as a category 5 super typhoon. Goni's intensity will likely decrease from here on in due to an eyewall replacement cycle, but there is a chance that the typhoon may intensify again if it completes it quickly. In just over 36 hours, Goni is forecast to make landfall with 155mph/250kph winds in Luzon, with significant impacts extending all the way to Bicol. Warnings are now beginning to be put in place by local authorities with signal #1 and signal #2 warnings currently in place. Note that southward shifts in the track forecast have occurred, and the risk for more significant impacts in Bicol and Metro Manilla have increased.

Typhoon Goni is currently projected as a Stage 6 on the CDPS where as much as 500 to 700 millimeters of rain could fall over Central Luzon along with extremely damaging winds near the center, potentially near category 5 strength. However, this will be over a concentrated area as Goni is a very compact storm. All Interests in the Central Luzon and Metro Manila Area, as well as Bicol, should be preparing for this Goni, Philippine name Rolly, as impacts will be catastrophic where the typhoon comes onshore.
