Revisiting "The Crush" - 1993 | Alicia Silverstone | Cary Elwes | #thecrush #90s

Here's something I threw together last week after my recent rewatch of this iconic psychological thriller! I remember first seeing this when I was around 12 or 13 and I became obsessed with the film's premise and Alicia Silverstone's performance. I also loved Cary Elwes from The Princesss Bride and Men in Tights so I was ecstatic to see him in it! It's just so crazy to believe that while watching it this time around, I'm now closer in age to Nick than Adrian - so, it's given me a renewed perspective on its subject matter than before when 13 yr-old me had a crush on him too haha.

This film is pretty controversial, and given how much I love the premise, it's easy to romanticize given how mature the two leads look and click together. I won't deny the chemistry. But realistically, I wanted to show both sides of the story since it's so easy for the audience to give Nick's character a pass given how outward and psycho Adrian's advances got. Not only is she after him, but he definitely blurred the line and entertained her advances further with all of his sexy glances and inappropriate comments. A very sketchy and horrible situation coming from both sides, but definitely the responsibility falls on the adult to draw the line, not the minor. The nuance and confusion presented in this film is very hard to watch as you see Nick regret his lustful behavior. There's some hypocrisy in his language though, even if he never did anything sexual: "I swear, I never laid a hand on her"... umm.. okay, boo.

In this edit I also wanted to show some sympathy for the male side of this given that men can also be framed for crimes if there are women who want to abuse the privileges of their own voice. Adrian definitely used this to her own advantage. This certainly isn't the case for most women who come forward, of course, but it's an unfortunate possibility that needs to be acknowledged regardless. But allegations coming from a minor? Yikes.

I chose the song "LEMONS" by Brye because I think the lyrics really align with Adrian's perspective on all of this — plus, it's very fitting to go along with the scene of her having a temper tantrum with the knife in the middle of the night while "making lemonade". (Sorry for any weird audio mixing, my editing schedule for work as been packed lately!)
