Kirkcaldy Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the Scottish historic county of Fife, situated in between Edinburgh and Dundee on the east coast, is the town of Kirkcaldy (pronounced 'kir-CAW-dee').
The name 'Kirkcaldy' is derived from the Brythonic words 'caer', 'caled' and 'din', which literally translates to 'fort on the hard hill'. The town began as a burgh under the control of Dunfermline Abbey. Then in 1644, a charter was granted by Charles I making it a royal burgh, and relinquishing the abbey's jurisdiction over the town.
Around the beginning of the 16th century Kirkcaldy became an important trading port. A harbour was established, which would conduct trade with overseas countries, in particular from the Baltic region. Flax, timber and hemp were imported while wool, salt, coal and fish among other products were exported.
From as early as 1672, linen weaving was a major industry in Kirkcaldy. When the Industrial Revolution took hold in the late 18th century, flax spinning by machinery was introduced. Later on, in the 1870s, linoleum manufacturing was introduced, becoming Kirkcaldy's main export up until the industry's decline in the 1960s.
Kirkcaldy is represented in sport by Raith Rovers Football Club. The name 'Raith' comes from a vague historical association with the region of Fife from Kirkcaldy (where the club is based) to Lochgelly.
18th century economist Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy. Smith was a key figure during the Scottish Enlightenment, and has been dubbed the 'Father of Economics'. Among his notable ideas are division of labour and the invisible hand, in reference to free markets.
