Amersham Walk: Town Centre | Old Amersham【4K】

Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 25 miles northwest of London, is the town of Amersham.

There are two main built-up areas in Amersham: Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill. The latter refers to the settlement that grew around the Metropolitan Railway, now the Metropolitan Line on the London Underground where Amersham is one of the northern terminus stations, along with its neighbour, Chesham. The railway arrived in 1892 and development in the area soon followed.

For the purpose of this video we focus on Old Amersham just under a mile away to the south of the station. As the name suggests, Old Amersham is steeped in history. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Elmodesham', meaning 'Ealhmund’s village'. In 1200 AD King John granted Amersham a market charter. Early industry in the town included lace, straw plaiting and chair making.

Amersham would have been the first coach stop for those travelling out west of London in the era of the horse-drawn carriage. As such, it became a thriving coaching inn town. Much of the appearance from this era is preserved with its wide main road and timber-framed inns with high archways for the horses and coaches to go through to the cobbled yards behind.

Perhaps the most prominent example of the architecture from this era is the Kings Arms, which appears at the 2-and-a-half minute mark. Dating from the 15th century it has featured extensively in TV and film productions including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Midsomer Murders and Miss Marple. It also hosted Oliver Cromwell around the time of the Civil War, where Amersham sided with the Parliamentarians.

Other notable landmarks in Old Amersham include St Mary's Church, seen at the beginning and end of the walk. The present church dates back to the 13th century. Just around the corner we see Amersham Market Hall, built in 1682 for the purpose of markets on the ground floor and traders' guild meetings on the first floor. It even has its own lock-up, complete with the notice "COMMIT NO NUISANCE" above! At the western end of the walk we see the River Misbourne and at the eastern end we see the Gardens of Remembrance.
