Stirling Walk: City Centre & Castle【4K】

Located in central Scotland, and around 25 miles northeast of Glasgow, is the city of Stirling.

Geographically, Stirling is situated on the River Forth around the point where the Highlands meet the Lowlands. In 1124 it was granted Royal Burgh status (a Scottish equivalent to a town in the middle ages) by David I.

From the early 12th century, or possibly earlier, Stirling Castle has stood atop a crag that overlooks the city. This is located at what was once the farthest downstream crossing of the River Forth, accounting for much of its strategic importance. It has been at the centre of various conflicts between the Scots and the English throughout the centuries.

In 1297 the Battle of Stirling Bridge took place during the First War of Scottish Independence. The fighting occurred around a wooden bridge over the River Forth, said to be big enough to let only two horsemen across at a time. The Scottish army, led by William Wallace and Andrew de Moray, waited for hours until enough of the English had crossed (believed to be around 2,000) before commencing the attack. The Scots were victorious, and in the aftermath, William Wallace was made Guardian of Scotland. In 1869 the Wallace Monument was completed. Seen just after the 24-and-a-half minute mark, this commemorates the spot where Wallace's and de Moray’s troops watched the crossing of the English over Stirling Bridge. The battle is depicted in the 1995 movie Braveheart, albeit with the bizarre omission of the bridge itself.

Throughout the Wars of Scottish Independence, Stirling Castle changed hands on multiple occasions. The most notable instance was, arguably, in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn. The Scottish army was led by King Robert I, a.k.a. Robert the Bruce, while the English army was led by Edward II. A pitched battle took place in the vicinity of Bannockburn, which today is a southern suburb of Stirling itself, though the exact location of the battlefield is unknown. The Scots scored a decisive victory, and in the immediate aftermath they reclaimed Stirling Castle.

From 1342 Stirling Castle remained in Scottish hands until 1603. During this time it served as a royal residence to various monarchs up to James VI, who ultimately became, additionally, James I of England and Ireland after the death of Elizabeth I.

In 1746 a siege on Stirling Castle took place as part of the Jacobite Rising of 1745-46. This was led by Charles Edward Stuart, also known by the nicknames: Bonnie Prince Charlie, and The Young Pretender. The rising was an attempt to restore the Stuarts to the throne of Great Britain (N.B. the union that ultimately formed Great Britain came about during the reign of the final Stuart monarch, Queen Anne). The siege was ultimately unsuccessful.

In 1848 the railway arrived in Stirling. Today, direct trains from here to Glasgow typically take around 30 to 35 minutes, while trains to Edinburgh take around 50 minutes.

Stirling is represented in sport by Stirling Albion Football Club. They were founded in 1945 - the same year in which King's Park Football Club folded. King's Park were an earlier club also based in Stirling, founded in 1875. In 1940 their stadium suffered a direct hit from the Luftwaffe. Repairs were made, but the club was unable to make a full recovery. Stirling Albion play their home games at Forthbank Stadium, about a mile east of the city centre.

In 2002 Stirling was granted city status as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. At the time, it became Scotland's sixth city. Currently there are eight cities in Scotland following the more recent additions of Perth (2012) and Dunfermline (2022).
