Leighton Buzzard Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, and around 40 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Leighton Buzzard.

Geographically Leighton Buzzard is situated near the Chiltern Hills, directly bordering the neighbouring town of Linslade to the west, separated by the River Ouzel. The name 'Leighton' comes from Old English 'Lēah-tūn', meaning 'farm in a clearing in the woods'. The origin of the suffix 'Buzzard' is believed to have come from Theobald de Busar, who was a Canon of Lincoln and prebendary of Leighton Buzzard at the turn of the 13th century.

It is claimed that Leighton Buzzard has been a market town since as early as the 11th century. The high street on which the market is held is home to over 70 listed buildings. The market cross dates from 1453.

In 1793 The Grand Junction Canal (renamed the Grand Union Canal in 1929) was built between London and the Midlands. This saw an increase in trade in Leighton Buzzard around the time of the Industrial Revolution.

In 1848 Leighton Buzzard received a railway connection. This would play a role in the infamous Great Train Robbery of 1963. Dubbed the Crime of the Century, it took place at Bridego Bridge, just south of Leighton Buzzard station. £2.6 million was stolen from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London on the West Coast Main Line, equivalent to around £55 million in today's money. The robbers stopped the train by tampering with a signal. The green light was covered and a battery was connected to power the red light. After being caught, the ringleaders were sentenced to 30 years in jail. Ronnie Biggs famously escaped Wandsworth Prison with a rope ladder and fled to Brazil.

British new wave band Kajagoogoo formed in Leighton Buzzard in the late '70s, originally known as Art Noveau.
