Burgess Hill Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of West Sussex, and around 40 miles south of central London, is the town of Burgess Hill.

The town's name is believed to come from the Burgeys family who were taxed here in 1296, 1327 and 1332 when the name of John Burgeys appears on the Subsidy Rolls. Prior to the 19th century though, the town was known as St John's Common.

From the 14th century, the annual St John’s Sheep Fair was held here on St John the Baptist day, the 24th of June, until it ceased in 1912. Aside from agriculture, other historic industries in the town have included pottery and brick-making.

In 1841 the railway arrived in Burgess Hill courtesy of the London and Brighton Railway. Being situated directly on the Brighton Main Line, the town grew significantly in the following decades, which helps to explain the prominence of the Victorian brickwork seen in the town centre. One building of particular note from this period of expansion is the Church of St John the Evangelist, built in the 1860s and seen at the end of the walk. Today, trains take just under an hour to reach central London, and around 15 minutes or less to reach Brighton.

Famous people from Burgess Hill include Simon Nye - writer of the sitcom Men Behaving Badly.
