E. Robert Schmitz plays Debussy Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun on Duo-Art Piano
E. Robert Schmitz (1889-1949) was an accomplished French-American pianist known particularly for his performances of Debussy. He performed frequently on the concert stage, founded the Pro Musica Society that introduced many European musicians (like Ravel) to America, and recorded many excellent reproducing piano rolls. In this May 1922 recording (Duo-Art roll #6532) made just 4 years after the composers death, he plays his own remarkable transcription of Debussy's "Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'un Faune," written originally for small orchestra in 1892. The piano is a fully restored mahogany1920 Steinway model XR 6'2" Duo-Art grand. The piano also happens to be for sale (see www.historicpianos.com).
