Death as our Greatest Teacher.
Death is our greatest teacher.
At the end of every yoga class we lay in savasana, corpse pose. This was intentionally chosen as the end pose so that we could practice dying consciously each day. In Buddhism, Hinduism, and in yoga it is a common practice to meditate on death. But very few western yoga practitioners actualize this as a daily practice. It may sound a bit morbid or strange to practice dying each day or meditating on death as a concept if you don’t know the reason why it is done. I’ve been a “death meditator” shall we say, for many years now. It has quite literally transformed my life and made the most mundane of days and experiences exceptionally beautiful and profound. I find myself dropping into spontaneous moments of astonishment and appreciate for the simplest of things, like watching a curtain blow in the wind, feeling soft sheets, watching a bubble form in the dish soap, and hearing my husbands heart beat with my head on his chest. How would you live if you knew you were dying? Do you know you are dying? Life is so beautiful and sacred because of its temporal nature. We forget this when we forget about death. Remembering how fragile life is daily isn’t morbid, it’s mindful living. It’s having supreme gratitude and appreciate for all of life. And living in complete awe of the opportunity to even be here at all. Death is our greatest teacher. Learn to die while your living and you will set yourself free. In this video I cover this concept in full and explain how we can form a healthy relationship with death through meditations that will transform the way we are living now.
