Alex Ovechkin's 24 Goals In 2021

The 2021 shortened season was an up and down year for Ovechkin. Despite injuries and COVID disruptions, at 35 years old Ovechkin was still among the top goal scorers in the league, finishing 13th in total goals and 8th in goals per game (0.53) - all while playing in the toughest division even after temporary re-alignment. Despite the relatively quiet season, Ovechkin still managed a few notable moments. These included passing Phil Esposito for 6th all-time in goals (accompanied by a great Joe B call), passing Brett Hull for second all-time in power-play goals - finishing 6 away from becoming the all-time record holder, and scoring in all 6 games against the Flyers. Unfortunately, a season after losing possibly his last chance to tie the record for 50-goal seasons, his streak of 15-consecutive seasons with at least 30-goals also ended, leaving him in a tie with Mike Gartner and Jaromir Jagr. Fortunately, he still has time to record 3 more 30-goal seasons which would be a new NHL record, but sadly his incredible streak has come to an end. The injuries and COVID protocol quarantine cost him 11 games altogether - really 12 considering he played only 39 seconds in a game against the Rangers on May 3rd (yes, that Capitals/Rangers game from last season) resulting in the lowest total of his career when just looking at the raw totals. After signing a 5-year extension in the offseason, Ovi made it clear - he is gunning for the Great One's all-time goals record. Whether he gets there or not is impossible to predict, but at the very least we can enjoy his greatness while he's still around. We will probably never see anyone like him again.
