The Iron Dome missile defense system is one of the most important tools in Israel’s military arsenal. Designed to shoot down incoming projectiles, it has saved saved countless civilian lives over various conflicts in the last decade, according to analysts.

Despite being regarded as the world’s leading defensive system, the relentless rocket barrage sent into Israel from Gaza on Saturday overwhelmed it and the Iron Dome was unable to handle the scale of attack.

The heavily coordinated attack by Hamas launched huge volume of rockets into Israeli airspace from multiple angles, overwhelming the system and making air defence much more difficult for Israel.
