World's Biggest Owl - Blakiston's Fish Owl In The Snow (plus a woodpecker visitor)
Here's a Blakiston's fish owl nest after snow. The female owl is in the nest while the male owl is out. At night the male owl brings food to the female owl. This is a Blakiston's fish owl's nest inside a tree hollow.
While filming this video we were afraid the nest could become covered with snow after the snowfall. The snow covers the edges of the tree hollow and the bird tail, but the snow doesn't cover the bird completely.
Blakiston's fish owl (Bubo blakistoni), the largest species of owl, is a fish owl, a sub-group of eagle owls which specialize in hunting in riparian areas. It is native to China, Japan, and north-eastern Asia. It's habitat is riparian forest, with large, old trees for nest-sites, near lakes, rivers, springs and shoals that do not freeze in winter.
The Blakiston's fish owl feeds on a variety of aquatic prey. These birds are fishing owls. They mainly catch fish, with common prey including pike (Esox reichertii), catfish, trout and salmon (Oncorhynchus ssp.). Sometimes these owls catch large fish.
This bird does not breed every year due to fluctuations in food supply and conditions. Courting occurs in January or February. Laying of eggs begins as early as mid-March, when ground and trees are still covered with snow. These owls prefer nesting in hollow tree cavities in Japan and Russia.
This video was filmed in Primorsky Krai, Russia.
