Why Do Ospreys Crash So Much

Since 1991, the MV-22 Osprey has been involved in almost twenty incidents that have killed over fifty service members. What’s wrong with the Osprey?
Most of the deadliest crashes occurred during the development phase of the MV-22. For example, the deadliest crash in its history took place in April of 2000 when 19 Marines died in a crash in Arizona.
The pilot was deemed at fault for this incident because he accelerated at over twice the allowed descent rate. The maneuver caused the right engine to stall and the aircraft to flip over.
Faulty wiring, inadequate fire protection, and throttling issues led to several other early accidents. This happened because the Osprey was and still is the first of its kind in aircraft technology.
And it’s been equally challenging for pilots to figure out how to fly it. Since the Marine Corps accepted it for fleet-wide use, all known accident causes have had some element of human error involved. Such a fact is a testament to the difficulty in piloting such a challenging aircraft.
