Jaguar I-PACE (2019): Test Drive & Impressions

I recently got to test drive a 2019 Jaguar I PACE recently, and wow, was I impressed. I could talk about it's performance, it's acceleration, or it's handling, but I don't think any of that can accurately describe what it's like to drive this car. So after having access to this car for a couple hours, here's what I thought.

After driving for about 10 minutes and getting used to how the car drives, I felt more connected to the road than I have in just about any other EV that isn't a Tesla. The batteries in the I-Pace are also on the floor of this car, giving it that very low center of gravity that helps with handling. But even more impressive was the acceleration in this vehicle…
I've driven a Nissan Leaf and Chevy bolt which are also pretty quick, but they feel a little shaky sometimes when accelerating, and I didn’t feel that at all, it was completely solid through the whole launch.

They’ve really designed this car to be adaptable for a few different driving situations, and to deal with that it has an adaptive air suspension. You can either set it to low if you’re gonna go around the track, which I doubt people will do in this car... The standard height is somewhere in the middle for comfort mode, and if you want to do off roading, you can jack it up all the way for rougher terrain. I think most people will just keep it in comfort mode but those other options are available.

Although this car isn’t a Tesla, it takes take some design aspects from their vehicles. Just like the Model S, these door handles slide out from the body of the car. Unfortunately when you approach the car with the key in your pocket, the car doesn’t present the door handles, but when you press on them, they slide out and then you can open the door. When you leave the car you can either press the button again or lock it using the keys, and when you do the mirrors also tuck in, which is pretty handy.

As for cargo space, in the front, there is an absolutely tiny frunk… I would probably just keep a charging cable in there for emergencies. There’s a decent size trunk, and the seats also fold down if you need some more room. Covering the trunk is this really odd rear window. Unlike other SUV’s where there’s a large flat rear window, the I-PACE has a really small curved window. It’s so small that I think it limits visibility when you’re driving. Typically SUV’s have pretty good visibility all around, but this car is really lacking here. I’m sure it’s so the car is more aerodynamic, but I wish they designed this a bit better.

My goal this year is to create 50 videos. Each week I'll be talking about a topic related to electric cars, and I would love to hear what you want to learn about. Leave a comment below!
