Tesla Model Y Event: What we learned

Late Thursday night, Tesla revealed their 7th production vehicle at their design studio in LA: The Model Y. This completes their S 3 X Y (with a 3 of course) lineup of cars. The event was incredibly hyped, and felt a lot like the apple events of 5 or so years ago. So here is what we learned.

If you missed it I actually live streamed the event with some of my commentary, so I will link that below if you want to check it out. I gained a lot of new subscribers during the stream, so if you're new to the channel, welcome!

Now jumping into the actual event;

Tesla kicked it off with a short video highlight of Tesla car production, as well as powerwall and solar products. I think this was a way to show that they're no longer the small automaker of yesteryear. They're an established car company that can now produce cars on a massive scale.

They then jumped in a brief history if their cars, starting with the first Tesla Roadster ever produced, serial number 1, which was delivered to Elon Musk back in 2008. They then rolled out the Model S, followed by the Model X and finally, the Model 3 right between the other two to spell out S 3 X. The Model 3 was originally the Model E, but as Elon explains... They also showed off the 2020 roadster, and the Tesla semi that is now available for reservation.

As they were talking about all of the cars and their history, it was clear Tesla was trying to build this rhetoric that they continue to defy the odds. Naysayers have continued to doubt Tesla with every step they have taken, with every car they’ve produced, they’ve continued to create incredible products.

After some more talking about Powerwall and solar, they finally roll out the Model Y, to spell out S 3 X Y with their cars.

They really didn’t say much, but did give the specs and the different trims they’ll be offering.

So here’s what we know:

For the 39,000 base model, you get 230 miles of range, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, but you’ll have to wait until Spring of 2021 to take delivery.

The other trims are scheduled to be delivered in Fall of 2020, this includes the long range starting at 47,000, Dual Motor AWD at 51,000, and performance at 60,000. And these prices are very reasonable compared to similar vehicles in their class.

The standard seating arrangement include 5 seats, but for a 3000 dollar upgrade that will go up to 7, but that won’t be available until 2021.

So now looking at the actual design of the car, it is about what I expected, just a bigger and taller Model 3, but with a few subtle changes. First off its a hatchback, so you’re gonna be able to load a lot more cargo in the trunk. This car actually has the second most storage in the Tesla lineup, with 66 cubic feet of space, sitting right behind the Model X.

And probably my favorite part, the chrome delete all around the car. It looks awesome, and i really wish this was an option on the Model 3.

On the inside, we have an identical interior to the Model 3, with the single touch screen in the center that controls basically everything in the car.

So overall, we got about what was expected, nothing more, nothing less. Tesla definitely played it safe here, and that is completely fine. There target market is SUV owners who want a Tesla, but can’t afford a Model X. SUVs are the number one type of vehicle in the US, so it will definitely sell here, but other countries will probably be great markets for the Model 3.
My goal this year is to create 50 videos. Each week I'll be talking about a topic related to electric cars, and I would love to hear what you want to learn about. Leave a comment below!
