Why the Pininfarina Battista Hyper-EV Costs $2 Million

Cars are expensive, there is no doubt about it. If you want a nice car in 2019, you’re gonna have to shell out a bit of cash to get one. And EVs are even more expensive, with the average price of new electric cars costing above what a traditional gas car will cost. In fact that’s probably the biggest complaint I hear about EVs - they cost a lot of money upfront. But usually it’s because a car costs above $50,000… not $2 Million.

This is the Pininfarina Battista, an all-electric hypercar. - and here is why it starts at just over $2 Million.

First off is just the brand. Pininfarina has designed a bunch of very recognizable production cars, like the Maserati GranTurismo, plus a ton of cars for Ferrari, like the 458 Italia, and the Enzo Ferrari, named after the founder of the legendary car producer. So Pininfarina definitely has some clout in the automotive space that can demand a high price.

So here is what you get for $2 Million:

A range of 280 miles (450km) which is fine, because if you buy this car, my guess is you won’t be road tripping in it. Just enough range to show it off and drive it back home with plenty of charge.

0-60 (100km) in under 2 seconds, which beats every production car on the market right now, and right on par with tesla’s upcoming Roadster.

A 1,400kW power output, about a 1900 horsepower motor equivalent, which beats most non-electric hypercars. The Bugatti Chiron, for example, only has 1500 horsepower.

Top speed of 217 mph (350km/hr). I don’t know why you would need go that fast, but if you’re buying a $2 Million car I can’t tell you what to do.

The shell of the car is all carbon fiber which keeps it light but also contributes to that high price tag. The body has an aluminum structure that also keeps the car light and will collapse if you are driving at top speed and happen to crash.

And finally to the electric part - The hypercar sits on a T shaped battery pack with 120KWh of energy which powers a motor in each wheel to achieve 2300 Nm of torque. So yeah, this thing is powerful.

The exterior has a classic hypercar look, with smooth design lines with butterfly doors to match. It almost feels like a BMW i8 mixed with a ferrari. On the back, a rear spoiler that pops up to keep the car on the ground.
There’s a variety of colors available as well - from what I’ve seen white, blue and grey will be available. But they may have others available if you apply to purchase one.

On the inside - it looks like a luxury cockpit, full of leather upholstery. It’s got 3 screens, One that shows your car settings, one that shows the media and navigation, and one in the middle that shows the speed and gear.

This car is fully customizable, so when you register to buy the car, Pininfarina will work with each customer to design the perfect car for them. Currently they’ve shown white, blue, and grey, all with these blue led accents - which I love and makes the car look like something straight out of TRON.

And now to the last thing that makes this car incredibly expensive - the stock. They are only making 150 of these cars. So if you want one, you’ll have to pony up over $2 Million. And if you don’t, someone else with a disposable income sure will.
