Porsche Taycan World Premiere: Recap and Thoughts

The Porsche Taycan has been one of the most hyped EVs that isn't a Tesla, and for good reason. The car is trying to do something that no other car has been able to do, dethrone the Model S in the luxury electric market.
Most EVs released from legacy automakers have been targeting a more economical crowd. These are vehicles like the Chevy bolt and Nissan leaf. Definitely great EVs and excellent commuter cars, but not a luxury head turner like the Model S.

Porsche first revealed their "Mission E" concept back in 2015 at the Frankfurt auto show, then in June 2018 giving it the official production name of "Taycan". Since then Porsche has received over 30,000 preorders for the vehicle, so people definitely want this thing.

All of that leads us to the official premiere of the Taycan, which took place at 3 different locations, and here's what went down:

Unfortunately I could not actually attend the event, but I was able to watch the live stream, which was a bit strange honestly.

Porsche hosted the event in 3 different locations; a solar farm in Neuhardenberg, Germany, a wind farm in Fuzhou, China, and Niagara Falls in Canada, which uses hydroelectric power. This actually created an amazing backdrop for the event with some really stunning visuals. Unfortunately the execution of the live stream was a bit weird, jumping between locations combined with some audio issues made the event a bit hard to follow.

But putting that aside, let’s talk about the actual car.

They started off by talking a bit about the different records the car has already broken, like the 24hr endurance record of 2,128 miles (3421 km), the Nurburing lap time of 7:42, a record for 4 door EVs, and their 26 launches to 124mph (200km/hr) with little drop off in performance.

I think this was a great intro to the event, Porsche really wanted to show off the performance of this car, and those records definitely show that. Not only is this car quick and can handle well, but it can also handle the stress that comes with racing, like constant performance and higher temperatures.

They then talked a bit about their actual production facilities, with the buzz words Smart, Lean and Green. They will be produced in germany with a goal of CO2 neutral production. So they not only want the car to be green, but the production as well.

As for the specs, here’s what we got:

Range: Up to 280miles (450km)(WLTP)
Top Speed: 162 mph (260km/hr)
0-60mph: 2.6seconds
Drag Coefficient: 0.25

Battery: 800V, 93kwh
Charging: Max input of 270kW (62mi/100km/5 mins)

A few things stick out here, the range is probably the most obvious one. 280 miles is a little underwhelming, probably considered middle of the road for today’s EVs. It sounds bad already but the WLTP is usually pretty lax on range ratings, meaning in the real world you’ll likely get even less.

With the battery, it's important to note that 800V system. Most EVs operate at 400V, and if you learned any basic electricity, you’ll know that power equals current times Voltage. So if you have higher voltage, you have less current to achieve the same amount of power. With this system, Porsche is hoping to make the motors more efficient by using less current, but also lowering some of the heat.

The last thing that sticks out is definitely the charging. The taycan can handle up to 270kw of charging, which is awesome, very similar to V3 supercharging with Tesla. Unfortunately they didn’t talk much about their plans for a charging network, because they won’t be able to use Tesla’s chargers, and I don’t know of many other charging stations that can produce that sort of output.

So lastly is the price. Porsche showed off two variations of the Taycan. The Turbo and Turbo S, which is a little odd because an electric car can’t have a turbo, but whatever. The Turbo starts at $150,900 and the Turbo S starts at $185,000 - which is a lot when you compare it to something like the Model S, and a lot of people are going to do that.

So overall this was a huge day for electric vehicles, another legacy auto-maker has entered the EV game, which can only do good things for the market as a whole.
