Model 3 or Model Y? | Ask Alex Ep.1

Model 3 or Model Y?
Definitely still stick with the Model 3. I like the Model Y, and I haven't driven one or actually seen in person so I can't make a lot of assumptions, but I think it's a lot bigger than the Model 3. Personally I like smaller cars and I typically just drive myself around, with maybe some camera gear so I don't need all that extra space.

Any regrets about your car?
Not really regrets per se, but some things I would like to upgrade on it. Biggest thing I'm missing right now is a ppf (paint protection film) or ceramic coat. Tesla paint isn't that great in the grand scheme of things so once I save up the money I definitely want to get that installed.

How tough is it making videos with the quarantine rules?
It's tough. Two things I wanted to do more of this year was test drives of new cars and collabs with other YouTubers, but unfortunately those have been put on hold for the time being. So as you could probably tell I've shifted to more videos I can shoot either inside my car or related to my car, so I'm adapting to it just like I'm sure everyone else is.

How is virus affecting your charging?
It's been a little tough. As some of you know I typically charge at work, but our office is basically shut down right now and I've been doing everything remotely. The plus side of that is I'm not driving as much, so I really only need to charge about once a week. I've got a supercharger about 15 minutes from me I can drive to or a level 2 charger at a Huntington bank like right down the road as well. So a few times I've actually just driven my car there and walked back to my apartment then walked back once it's done charging. So not a huge deal but obviously not the best case scenario. I'm actually looking for a new apartment right now, and plan on getting an attached garage so I can plug my car in there when needed.

Hardest part of getting started and why you started?
So this channel has 3 goals: 1. Educate people about electric vehicles technology 2. Share the experience of living with and driving an EV and 3. Test driving or discussing new electric vehicles to show people other cars besides mine
Out of all the updates to your car which was your favorite
Definitely V10, when I first picked up my car it still had version 9, but V10 added a bunch of stuff to the theater and Spotify support, which I use literally every day. That's definitely what I use the most in terms of things that have been added via software.

New or used EV?
Depends on what you plan on using it for, most older EVs don’t have a ton of range, and the tech will continue to improve
Charging for Semis coming to other Tesla cars?
Model S & X no, I think the charge limit is pretty much tapped
Model 3 & Y maybe, not sure what the max charge rate of those are, currently can go up to 250kW
Semi is planned to be 1MW or higher, so 4x more power

Will EVs take over as the dominant car and when?
Yes, I definitely think so. And I think two things are holding people back right now. That's the upfront cost, even though EVs are cheaper to own in the long run people are still hesitant to put down the money upfront, they'd rather buy a cheap gas car and pay for more expensive fuel over the life of the car. And the other thing is charging times. Even though charge time is really only an issue on road trips people still want the ability to charge in less than 10 minutes and be able to drive 3 more hours. Tesla is getting close with their V3 supercharger that can add 75 miles of range in 5 minutes, but every EV will need to match or exceed that rate to be at a point where people feel comfortable with it. But with that being said, once people realize that charging an EV is simpler, easier, and cheaper than gas, things will change really quickly. By dominant I'm just going to call that over 50%, so I think in the next decade or 2030 we'll be there with the rate that technology is improving. Right now they are around 2% of new vehicle sales if I'm remembering correctly, and that’s doubled from 1 percent in the past year so I’m confident within the next 10 years they’ll be the main mode of passenger travel.
