Is Armenia Abandoning Russia for Europe? Moscow Demands Answers

A major diplomatic crisis is unfolding between Russia and Armenia — two nations that have been strategic allies for decades.

According to a Reuters report published on May 10, 2025, the Kremlin publicly accused Armenia of giving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy a platform to make what Russia calls "anti-Russian remarks" during his visit to the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

During that visit, Zelenskiy made a pointed statement — suggesting Russia feared Ukrainian drones could fly over Moscow's Red Square during the iconic Victory Day parade on May 9, which commemorates the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two.

The warning was taken seriously. Russia's parade went ahead as planned, but in a noticeably scaled-back format — with no military hardware on display, a direct response to the threat of Ukrainian drone attacks.

The diplomatic fallout was immediate. Russia summoned the Armenian ambassador on Thursday to formally protest what it called "terrorist threats against Russia." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made Russia's position clear, stating the situation was "not normal" and "not in keeping with the spirit of our relations with Yerevan." He added that Russia was waiting for a formal explanation from the Armenian government.

But the tensions go beyond Zelenskiy's visit. Russia also expressed serious concern that Armenia is being pulled into the European Union's influence. Just days earlier, Armenia hosted the European Political Community summit on May 4 — an event attended by more than 40 European leaders, including Zelenskiy — followed immediately by an EU-Armenia summit.

For Moscow, this is a major red flag. Armenia hosts several Russian military bases, making it a critical strategic partner. The relationship began deteriorating sharply in September 2023, when Azerbaijan forcibly retook the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh — a move that happened despite Russian peacekeepers being stationed there, widely seen as a failure of Russian influence in the region.

Armenia, feeling unprotected by Moscow, has since been visibly moving closer to Western institutions — and Russia is now watching that shift with open hostility.
