Peter Mandelson, the veteran Labour politician and former British Ambassador to the United States, is facing a mounting crisis on multiple fronts.

His consulting firm, Global Counsel — founded in 2010 after Labour's general election defeat and boasting high-profile clients including TikTok — has collapsed into administration, leaving creditors with unpaid bills totalling nearly £4.6 million more than the firm's remaining assets. Among those owed money is the UK tax authority, HMRC, which is still awaiting £645,000 in unpaid taxes.

The firm's downfall coincides with deepening scrutiny of Mandelson's personal and professional conduct. He was appointed Britain's Ambassador to Washington in February 2025, but was abruptly dismissed in September of the same year after Downing Street stated that new information had emerged regarding the depth of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein — the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender.

Newly released documents reveal that Mandelson had actually failed security vetting before his ambassadorial appointment. The Cabinet Office's Propriety and Ethics team warned that his appointment carried a "general reputational risk," citing concerns about his ties to Russia, China, and most critically, his close relationship with Epstein — with records indicating contact between the two dating back to 2002, continuing even after Epstein's 2008 conviction.

Due diligence papers also noted reports that Mandelson stayed at Epstein's property while the paedophile was serving a jail sentence in June 2009.

Adding further pressure, it has now emerged that Britain's National Crime Agency reviewed allegations concerning Mandelson and Epstein as early as Spring 2024 — months before his ambassadorial appointment. Officials reportedly concluded the accusations were based on hearsay, and no full investigation was opened. Downing Street was informed after the case was dropped in Summer 2024.

In February 2025, Metropolitan Police arrested and questioned Mandelson as part of a separate probe into misconduct in public office. He remains on police bail and has not been charged with any offence. Scotland Yard has confirmed the investigation will take considerable time.

Mandelson has previously denied any wrongdoing and expressed regret over his friendship with Epstein.
