US Blockades Iran's Ports — But Are Ships Already Breaking Through?

The United States has launched a full naval blockade of Iranian ports, cutting off maritime trade in and out of the country. The move came less than 24 hours after high-level negotiations between the US and Iran, held in Pakistan, ended without a deal.

US President Donald Trump announced the blockade, with American forces ordered to intercept or redirect any vessel — regardless of nationality — attempting to reach or leave Iran's coastline. The primary objective is to cripple Iran's oil export revenue and increase economic pressure in the ongoing standoff over Iran's nuclear programme.

US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed earlier today that 23 ships had been forced to turn around near the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world's most critical oil shipping lanes — since the blockade began. In a social media statement posted just one hour ago, Centcom declared that "the blockade has completely halted economic trade going in to and out of Iran by sea."

However, questions are already emerging about the blockade's effectiveness. BBC Verify independently tracked at least four vessels departing from Iranian ports that appeared to have successfully crossed the US blockade line, raising doubts about whether the operation can be fully enforced.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes. A prolonged blockade could have significant consequences for global energy markets, regional stability, and international shipping.

The situation remains rapidly developing, with diplomatic and military tensions continuing to escalate between Washington and Tehran.
