Will the EU's Sanctions Offer Unlock an Iran Nuclear Deal — or Backfire?
At an informal EU summit held in Nicosia, Cyprus, European leaders gathered with counterparts from Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon to address one of the world's most pressing geopolitical flashpoints — Iran's nuclear program.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that the European Union is willing to gradually ease its sanctions on Iran, but only if a comprehensive and lasting nuclear agreement is secured. Merz described the move as the EU's direct contribution to advancing the diplomatic process and achieving a durable ceasefire.
European Council President Antonio Costa added to the urgency by calling for the immediate and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — the critical waterway through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes. Costa described free passage through the strait as "vital for the entire world," signaling deep European concern over global energy security.
Perhaps the most striking warning came from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who cautioned that if current negotiations fail to produce an agreement as strong as the 2015 JCPOA — the landmark Iran nuclear deal that U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from during his first term — the international community could be left facing a significantly more dangerous Iran.
The statements reflect a united European front pushing for diplomacy over escalation, while also underlining the high stakes involved: energy markets, regional stability, and nuclear non-proliferation all hang in the balance.
