Some thoughts from Lesson #7...

If you can’t escape a physical threat, the most effective method of self-defense is OFFENSE-- attacking the attack. Why?

Because bad guys expect you to try and get away from them. They don’t expect you to move closer. So, throw your attacker a surprise party they’ll never forget-- get in his space and in his face.

Here’s a simple three-step attack drill--

STEP 1: Find a wall. Try to push it down as hard as you can. Use your hands, elbows, shoulders, and even your head!

This is the foundational movement that will put power behind everything you do. Get your bones lined up until you feel your strength. Turn your whole body into one giant fist.

Let’s talk about what we can do once we get into a bad guy's space. Starting with your hands, you can be striking with the palms, clawing, gouging, or grabbing the face. You can grab the throat, too. Or their hair or their hoodie.

A little closer, you can strike with your elbows, either vertically or horizontally. If your hands are trapped, you can still attack with your shoulders or your head. Closer than that? Well, you can always bite.

Make it your goal to feel confident that no matter where you end up you can always do something.

Just don't forget to protect your head! Practice hiding your head inside your hands, elbows, or shoulders at all times. It only takes one hit to the head or one cut to the neck to lose your life--don't forget that!

STEP 2: Pillow Fight! Put a pillow up against the wall. Practice combining your strikes so that the pillow never falls. This is not about power, so don’t break your hand or put a hole in your wall! Just focus on maintaining constant pressure.

STEP 3: Turn the bad guy. If the bad guy keeps coming at you, our next strategy is to cut him in half. How?

By positioning yourself to the side. If you face a bad guy straight on, you have to fight two arms, two legs, and their full bodyweight. But if you can turn him, or drive to their side, you only have to deal with one arm and one leg. That's like cutting him in half!

It’s hard to practice this alone, so practice with a heavy bag, or a tree, or even a coatrack! Just find something to help you visualize your position.

Two quick reminders. First, don’t forget that once we go on the attack, we are only looking to solve the problem, not destroy the person causing the problem. Your goal is to get away to a safe place--that's it!

Second, don’t worry about fighting back the "right" way or the "wrong" way...if you’re fighting for a just cause, just fight.

Final thought: As you practice these moves, make sure you also practice the feelings behind these moves. Imagine that someone is hurting somebody you love, somebody who can’t fight back, or hurting you.

When it's time to take action, don’t just attack with your hands, attack with your heart. Because a little hellfire is more effective than a lot of technique.
