Four Four North
"Four Four North" was written by Leo Kottke and appears on his 1986 album "A Shout Towards Noon". What makes this tune particularly interesting is that another tune with the same melody ("Three Quarter North") appears on this album. "Three Quarter North" is written in 3/4 time (waltz), whereas "Four Four North" is written in 4/4 time, so that each tune has its own feel, even though the melody is basically the same for both.
"Four Four North" is deceptively simple in its structure, using only three basic chords throughout the tune. As with many Kottke tunes, the fingerings and intricate syncopation he uses make the tune a challenge for the guitarist.
On the album, Kottke plays the tune in dropped D tuning, tuned down about a half step. I've heard him play it in concert with a capo on the 4th fret, which is what I tried in this version. The guitar is a 2002 Taylor LKSM6.
