Bourree
Written by J.S. Bach around 1712 as a part of his Lute Suite No. 1, Bourree in E minor is a fine example of Bach's musical genius. Adapted for the guitar in the 20th century, this classic has been covered by guitarists ranging from Andres Segovia to Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. Jethro Tull recorded a jazz-flavored version on their 1969 album "Stand Up", and hundreds of others have provided their interpretations over the past 300 years. It provides a great workout for the left hand for the guitarist, with the bass and treble lines simultaneously walking in opposite directions throughout most of the tune (a technique called "contrapuntal", for which Bach is noted).
Since I didn't have a Lute handy (and wouldn't have a clue what to do with it if I did), I played this on a 2003 Taylor guitar (Leo Kottke Signature Model).
