Lecture 153: Traces of Enlightenment thinking in 19th Century Irish Mathematics - John Lyness

The European Scientific Revolution was underway before the start of the Age Enlightenment / Reason. New ideas, such as the mathematical methods of Newton and Liebniz, were rapidly taken up and propagated by Enlightenment figures such as D’Alembert, Voltaire, Condorcet and others.
Later in Ireland, for most of the Cy19, Pure Mathematics activity was centred on Trinity College Dublin with its most notable theorist being William Rowan Hamilton.

This lecture will connect some of those Cy18 European Enlightenment scientists who took up the ideas of Newton and Liebnitz.
The ideas of the Cy17 Scientific Revolution and the Cy18 Enlightenment eventually spread West to Ireland. The work of some prominent and productive Cy19 Irish mathematicians will be described as exemplars and then the durable ideas and influences fostering Irish Mathematics and Sciences until today will be described.

John Lyness is an engineer with an Irish – Welsh background. He is a Board Member and the Research Director of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Ireland and Reader Emeritus in Civil Engineering at Ulster University. He has interests in sustainability, dimensional analysis, the appropriate use of computer models, Georgism and education.
