181: The Soldiers of ‘22 - An Analysis by Colum Ó Ruairc & Shane Waters
Trasna na Tíre welcomes back Ó Ruairc and Waters as they analyse the Republican dead of the Irish Civil War which raged across Ireland from late June 1922 to early May 1923. Thousands would die during this horrific conflict, known as Cogadh na gCarad (The War of Friends) however this discussion focuses totally on those from the Republican persuasion, using multiple case studies.
The conflict would progress from urban to open rural warfare before transitioning into a guerrilla campaign by a weakening Republican force. The horrors of the Civil War were particularly felt by the Republicans who would experience close to eighty executions, hundreds of residual deaths and over one hundred extra-judicial killings at the hands of the new Free State Army, which continued after the ceasefire of May 1923. The speakers will also focus on those lesser known deaths from the harsh conditions experienced during imprisonment and will give a detailed overview of the Month of Horrors in Co. Kerry: which saw some of the worst atrocities carried out in the name of the new Irish Free State.
This talk is a continuation of Ó Ruairc and Water’s first presentation on Trasna na Tíre (Lecture 149) in which they gave an overview of their current project: the amassing of every Republican death from April 1916 to late 1924. Their work is a definitive collation of each Republican death and supplies detail to each and every profile in regards their background, affiliations, familial details, cause of death and where they might be buried. The duo are also focused on amassing any existing photograph or memory card for each recorded death.
