170: The Coollattin Diaspora in Canada by Kevin Lee

Kevin Lee is a native of Rathdrum County Wicklow, a town which was part of the former Fitzwilliam owned Coollattin Estate.
Kevin spent his working career as Principal of Colaiste Bhride, a second level college located in Carnew, Co. Wicklow. Significantly, the catchment of this school is virtually identical to what once constituted the Coollattin estate.
While studying in UCD Kevin developed a passion for 19th century Irish history and historical geography. He is a first class honours graduate from University College Dublin.
Kevin is founder and chairperson of Carnew Historical Society. He is a specialist on the socio-economic history of 19th century Ireland and has lectured widely, both in Ireland and Canada, on the assisted programme of emigration from south county Wicklow to Ontario, Canada. This was the largest such programme implemented during the course of the Irish potato famine.
Kevin is the recognised expert on the history of the Coollattin estate which once extended over an area of 82,500 acres. Kevin, with his wife Eleanor, now fronts the Coollattin Canadian Connection. This initiative aims to reconnect thousands of Canadians with their south Wicklow roots. He has recently published two local histories, which came about from Kevin’s daily Facebook history posts from the first lockdown of 2020: ‘The Liar’s Bench’ and ‘Under the Fox,’ which supplies the reader with a multitude of various stories from across parts of what was the old Coollattin Estate.
