179: The British intelligence war against the IRA, 1969 to 1975 by Dr. Thomas Leahy
In this follow-up talk, Dr Leahy explores the impact of British intelligence operations (informers, agents, special forces and more) against the Provisional IRA from the start of the conflict in 1969 to the IRA's prolonged 1975 ceasefire. He explores whether British intelligence helped push the IRA into the 1975 ceasefire. The talk investigates known intelligence successes and failures against the IRA in IRA urban heartlands (Belfast and Derry), rural heartlands (South Armagh, Tyrone, parts of Fermanagh) and in England. He'll detail how UK and IRA archival papers suggests the IRA's prolonged cessation in 1975 emerged because the UK Government was examining the possibility of reaching a Loyalist and Republican peace settlement involving some form of independence for Northern Ireland. The talk is based on the early chapters of his book The Intelligence War Against the IRA (Cambridge 2020) out now in paperback and hardback. It will helps us understand why the IRA called a ceasefire in 1975, why the ceasefire collapsed and how the IRA began to adapt before 1975 to sustain its campaign (if needed) in the long-term.
