Logs to lumber, My first rive, part 1
There's only a few videos on this ancient technique. Modern machinery has taken over lumber production. Riven wood is pretty uncommon because of it's back-breaking labor intensiveness. Not only that, but it does "waste" a lot of lumber.
Modern processes can make more lumber out of the same log, but the quality is inferior. But that's not to say that the quality is bad.
The supposed results of boards that are radially split from riven wood are very stable, very strong, and long lasting lumber that will outlive many generations.
Far, far down the road, I have some ideas for this technique. But first things first, I need to get good at it!
