UNC stalwart Don Sylvester dies — PM hails ‘steadfast fighter’ as party mourns

The United National Congress has lost a dedicated political figure, as long-serving member Don Sylvester has died, prompting tributes from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and party colleagues.

In a statement issued following news of his passing, the Prime Minister described Sylvester as a committed and loyal servant of the UNC whose contribution spanned decades of political involvement at both national and grassroots levels.

Sylvester previously served as a temporary government senator during the tenth parliament between 2012 and 2014. He later contested the St Ann’s East constituency in the 2015 general election and remained actively involved in local government and party operations over the years.

According to the Prime Minister, Sylvester was known for stepping forward whenever duty called, bringing energy, consistency, and a strong sense of purpose to every role he undertook. She noted that his presence on the UNC’s national executive reflected his reliability and deep-rooted commitment to the party’s mission.

Describing him as a “true grassroots activist,” Persad-Bissessar said Sylvester maintained a close connection with supporters, earning respect among party members for his accessibility and unwavering support.

His passing, she added, represents a significant loss not only to the UNC but to all who worked alongside him throughout his years of service.

On behalf of the government and the party, condolences were extended to Sylvester’s family, friends, and supporters, with recognition of the lasting impact of his contribution to public life.
Sylvester’s legacy, the Prime Minister said, will be remembered for its loyalty, dedication, and enduring service to the people and the political movement he championed.
