Coast Guard’s dramatic rescue of windsurfer captured on camera
EVANSTON, Ill. – A man windsurfing on Lake Michigan Monday afternoon had to be rescued by the Coast Guard after his sail was damaged.
The dramatic rescue was captured on the Coast Guard boat’s camera.
For about an hour they searched the shore off of Evanston in the choppy 3-5 foot waves and strong winds.
The windsurfer’s mast and sail snapped a mile off the shore. He used a water proof phone to contact the Coast Guard and tried to lead them to his position.
“He was really hard to see at first,” said Michael Desormeaux of the Coast Guard. “He was wearing a dark wet suit and dark flotation device. It was really hard with the waves to see him.”
The coast guard as well as rescue crews from Evanston played a role in this effort.
The windsurfer is expected to be okay.
