Teen donates birthday money to church

HARRIMAN, Tenn. -- Usually, when teenagers plan a birthday party, it includes something fun for their friends, like a pool party or a bonfire. But one 13-year-old in Harriman, Tennessee had something else in mind.
Ryan Nelson told his parents he didn't want a party. He didn't even want presents, at least not for himself. Instead, he took all his birthday money and donated it to an area church. He also packed up and donated canned soups, ramen noodles and lots of clothes and blankets.

Nelson explained why he decided this year wasn't for presents and cake.

"The community, in my opinion, has given me so much, so I think this year on my birthday, it's time to give back to the community," he said.

His donations will go to M-14 Ministries' "Dry Bones" shelter.

Shelter director Dwayne Linger said he was overwhelmed by Nelson's donations, because he doesn't see teens donate often. He hopes this starts a pattern.

"I just hope that other kids see what he's done and follow his lead. I think it's a great blessing, what he's done," Linger said.

Ryan said he decided to donate to the church after watching his mother donate to a different church earlier this year.
