Infant’s mysterious seizures bring friends together
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thanks to social media, chances are you have at least one person in your life who you consider a real friend, despite the fact you only know each other by "meeting" on Facebook.
Tonight's Pass It On features just that kind of friendship. In fact, they've never met in person before — but they're about to!
We met this week's playmaker, Damika Leaks, at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. She's worried about her Facebook friend, Tiffany Perkins, someone she only knows online from their mutual interest in couponing.
"I've never seen her face to face," Damika says.
And like all good grandparents, Tiffany has been posting a lot of pictures of her first grandchild, Kayleigh, born just three months ago.
"Just a typical Facebook relationship, every moment of Kayleigh's life she's been posting."
But about a month ago, Tiffany started asking for prayers; little Kayleigh was in the hospital with unexplainable seizures — dozens of them — and she'd lost her job while being at her bedside all that time.
That's why Damika emailed us to Pass It On.
I count off $300 from WREG and $300 more from our anonymous Collierville doctor and his wife. We walk inside the lobby at Le Bonheur, and Damika makes the call to Tiffany.
When Tiffany gets off the elevator and sees us, she stops dead in her tracks, overwhelmed by the surprise.
Kayleigh's illness is taking an emotional toll.
"It's really really bad. When she has a seizure they may go on 12 minutes," Tiffany said. "God is able. She's going to be OK."
And Tiffany was glad she could help ease the pain.
"It was an awesome feeling, that's unexplainable."
Kayleigh has since been diagnosed with infantile spasms. Doctors say they'll need to give her two shots in the legs for six weeks, but by the time she turns a year old, she should not longer be having the seizures.
