Far East Man - George Harrison (1974)

"Far East Man" was released in December 1974 on George Harrison's fifth solo album, Dark Horse. Excited about the 50th Anniversary release of All Things Must Pass in August! Hope to finish a couple/few new and/or updated GH vids in honor of the occasion. Time seems to have brought the consensus for the standout tracks on the album being; "Far East Man", "Simply Shady" https://youtu.be/6SQaJU_5H1c and "So Sad", I'd absolutely agree, but the rest of the album is pretty great as well. 4k video w/ 96KHz/24 bit HD FLAC audio (sourced from 2014's The Apple Years Box).

Still way behind in uploading new videos as I just don't have the time for much work with the vid hobby, but this is a very special upload for me simply because it's the first video I've ever made with a different program than all the others. Big THANK YOU! to my friends still with me....wishing you all more music in yer lives! ;-)

(The following paragraphs are probably of most interest to others making videos, or interested in my experience with software...feel free to skip it if you don't need the ramble! ;-)
Even though Photodex rolled up their carpets a couple of years ago, I have continued to use the program without any issue, that is until recently where it seems that the lack of updates (the last one was in August of 2017!) have started to cause issues. I have several other videos nearly finished in Producer, but when I tried to render them there were problems....crashes, video clips rendered frozen, some elements appear as black screen, and most frustrating of all, the timing was frequently off during the build phase (to the point that I needed to make notes where I was adding or subtracting up to 15 or 20 seconds to match some audio and video timings)....it was starting to get really unfun. I tried to import and render a couple of those in the new software (Photopia Director), but it was a mess. Finally decided to import an old (and less complex) unfinished video from the old program into the new program and stick with it. I struggled to get the video the way I wanted it...there are a lot of things that I couldn't get right, but after maybe 10 renders to make corrections, I decided that I'd had enough and would just accept this result as my first effort with the new program. Not sure what to do about the other more complex videos that I have nearly finished in the old software? Bummed to think that I'll need to re-do other videos, but at least there is hope convert so some of that work might see the light of day. I really don't like the interface in Photopia as much as I did the one in Photodex, I know that much of that is due to unfamiliarity (after all I've been using the old program for nearly 20 years!). I've been encouraged by other folk who have successfully made the conversion. There are glitches in the program and using many of the most basic tools is counter-intuitive from the old program, BUT the new program is VERY stable and I've yet to have a crash (even with very complex efforts loaded and 4k rendering)...PLEASE give it some attention Photopia!!!

From Wikipedia:
Richard Ginell of AllMusic highlights "Dark Horse" and the "exquisite" "Far East Man" but rues that, in issuing an album when his voice was ravaged by laryngitis, Harrison eroded much of the prestige he had gained over his former bandmates as a solo artist. Mojo's John Harris describes Dark Horse as "Not pretty ... a tanking long-player", with "Far East Man" the only redeeming track. Paul Du Noyer, writing for Blender, also highlights the Harrison–Wood collaboration.

In his book on the Beatles' first ten years as solo artists, Robert Rodriguez rates Dark Horse a "near-great" work, like Lennon's Mind Games and Rock 'n' Roll, adding that Harrison's "hot streak" only ended with Extra Texture. Ultimate Classic Rock ranked Dark Horse 31st (out of 63) in their list of the best Beatles solo albums released up to late 2018. In a similar list, Junkee ranks it at number 5, describing the album as a "big, footstomping masterpiece" that has improved with age, and "a work of considerable beauty, held in place by the crushing, excellent titular song".

[Lyrics]
While the world wages war
It gets harder to see
Who your friends really are
I won't let him down
Got to do what I can
I won't let him drown
He's a far east man

All these ups and those downs
Makes me question what love is
Is it a lie or worthwile
I won't let him down
Got to do what I can
I won't let him drown
He's a far east man

Sometime is so short
But it takes so long
Wondering if it is
Or if I'm wrong
Even then my heart seems
To be the one in charge
Can only do what it tells me

We can't let them down
We've got to do what we can
We can't let him drown
He's a far east man

Looks like right here on earth
God, it's hellish at times
But I feel that a heaven's in sight
And I can't let hin down
Got to do what I can
I can't let him drown
He's a far east man
