Surrender - Jon Anderson (1982) Slava Ukraini

"Surrender" was released on Jon Anderson's 3rd solo album Animation, in the summer of 1982. I have always really loved this song, both the music and the message, it's just kinda special. Animation is a decent enough album, but it was quite a letdown for me after the album that came before it (Song of Seven), which is by far my favorite Jon Anderson album (or Yes solo record for that matter). Thanks for watching!

This 4k video is an update of another really old original video I had made, mainly to be able to be able to include with flac audio track taken from the new 2021 "Remastered and Expanded Edition" which was recently released by Esoteric Recordings. The old video featured a not so great audio track of the song.

As for the video, this is a very rare update for an old video where I've not tried to maintain the style and elements that I'd used before. Still struggling with the new software and just haven't had time to spend with it. I needed to go into After Effects and create some of the effects I was shooting for, but wasn't feeling quite enough motivation as my updates usually don't do as well as new vids...plus my original for this video is one that ranks very high in search already, so I know this one will sink to the bottom fairly quickly. For you fans that love the tune as much as I do....this one's a labor of love just for you! ;-)

From Wikipedia: Animation was recorded during a busy time for Anderson when he was collaborating with Vangelis and Mike Oldfield and exploring new age and electropop.

As with the previous album Song of Seven, several well-known musicians were involved in Animation, including Simon Phillips, David Sancious, Jack Bruce and Morris Pert.

The album was produced by producer Neil Kernon who had worked with acts such as Daryl Hall and John Oates and was released on vinyl but no CD version was published until 2006, when a limited edition CD re-release of the album with two bonus tracks was issued by Opio Media. Unfortunately the CD was not made from the original masters but from a worn copy of the vinyl, which led to complaints from purchasers. The song "All God's Children" was produced by producer Tony Visconti (who had worked with more mainstream British acts such as David Bowie and T. Rex)

"Surrender" and "All in a Matter of Time" were released as singles.

The album was promoted with a world tour on which Anderson performed songs from the album as well as several Yes classics, mostly in medley form.

A follow-up album entitled Chagall was recorded but not released.[2]

One track on the album, "Boundaries", later appeared on other works by Anderson (entitled "O'er" on The Promise Ring) and Yes (entitled "Somehow, Someday" on Open Your Eyes).

For this album, Anderson met an old friend from the past: Ian Wallace had been playing drums in his band The Warriors in the 1960s before Yes.

[Lyrics]
What a way to Surrender, Surrender [Repeat: x2]
It was a mid-summer night dream long ago
I kinda got me a mood
About me, hit me,
Something was trying to tell me something
I know it sounds pretty crazy really
When you think about it, but I,
Heard voices calling me saying
Have you heard the good news personified
You realize what we're talking about
About the power of love
Why don't the United Nations
Declare a special night celebration
We're gonna send the weapons up on a starry night
Explode them above the atmosphere, it sounds right
The whole damn world will be watching
The magic mushrooms in the bright sky
Such a night of splendor
What a way to surrender
What a way to surrender
See me off down to grab the colonels and the generals
To write a letter to the heads of the government, government
Asking them to name, the day
If you think anything of anyone
Why don't sit right down and write that letter
Getting rid of that fear the sooner the better
How about this for a mid-summer night dream
A night we all will remember
All will remember
We're gonna send the weapons up on a starry night
Explode them above the atmosphere,
It sure sounds right (believe me)
The whole damn world will be watching
The whole damn world will be cheering
Such a night of splendor
What a way to surrender [Repeat: x4]
