A Quick Update On My Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnow Planted Tank!
Here’s a 586-day update on my golden white cloud mountain minnow tank, and honestly, this setup has been one of my most consistent low-maintenance aquariums.
The tank is 45 litres (around 12 US gallons), running Fluval Stratum aquasoil and a Hygger HG76 light at full intensity for 6 hours a day. It’s completely unheated, sitting at room temperature, which drops to around 18°C (64°F) during winter.
The fish are all doing great, although the dominant male still claims the foreground and constantly chases the others away. Because of that, most of the breeding activity happens in the background of the tank. Even though they do spawn regularly, the snail population quickly eats the eggs, so I’ve never actually had any fry survive in this setup.
Speaking of snails, I’ve currently got a lot of pink ramshorns in here, and I’m planning to move some of them into two new tanks I’ve set up for Medaka rice fish grow-outs. The idea is to turn those tanks into dedicated snail breeding setups, which will eventually help feed pea puffers I’m hoping to keep later this year.
Plant growth has been solid overall, but the Hygrophila 53B has started to develop holes in its leaves, likely due to the colder winter conditions. I’ll be swapping that out for Lobelia cardinalis, which is naturally found in colder regions like Canada, so it should handle this setup much better.
My yellow Neocaridina shrimp colony is also doing really well, but the snail population is starting to get a bit out of control again. If left unchecked, they could outcompete the shrimp for food, so removing some should help keep things balanced.
This tank is a great example of how a simple, room-temperature setup can stay stable long-term with just a bit of maintenance and observation.
