Hidden Aquarium Costs And How To Reduce Them!

Aquarium keeping can be more expensive than you expect—especially once you move beyond the basics. In this video, I cover hidden aquarium costs that many beginners overlook and share practical tips to reduce or even avoid them altogether.

One major cost is electricity, especially from heaters. While filters and lights are usually energy-efficient, heating your tank can really add up. I share how choosing fish that thrive at cooler temperatures—like white cloud mountain minnows, medaka rice fish, or even keeping guppies and neon tetras at 22°C—can lower or eliminate heating costs entirely. Using a lid or simple DIY insulation helps even more.

Another often unexpected cost comes from upgrading stock accessories in aquarium kits. While kits are a great starting point, many hobbyists soon want better lighting, filtration, or heating. Fortunately, there are budget-friendly brands I’ve had great success with—like Hygger, Seaoura, Nicrew, and AquaEl. I also maintain a blog with recommended gear I personally use (linked below).

Then there’s filter media—you don’t need to spend big on fancy biomedia. I use 30 PPI foam in most of my filters, even in my Fluval FX2 canister, and it handles both mechanical and biological filtration exceptionally well.

Aquatic plants can be another sneaky cost. While cheap online options exist, they often arrive in poor condition. I recommend reputable UK-based suppliers like Horizon Aquatics and Aquarium Gardens, and share a few tricks for stretching your plant purchases further.
