A Quick And Easy Guppy Care Guide!

Thinking about keeping guppies? 🐠 After nearly two years of keeping these beautiful little fish, here’s my no-nonsense guppy care guide—covering everything from tank size and setup to water parameters, feeding, breeding, and how to avoid common mistakes. Whether you’re setting up your first guppy tank or looking to improve your current setup, this guide is packed with experience-based tips to help you succeed. 💡

🐟 TANK SIZE
The right tank size depends on whether you're keeping males, females, or breeding. For male-only tanks, I recommend one guppy per gallon if you’ve got good filtration. Male guppies are smaller and produce less waste than females, so you can stock them more densely. For females, aim for one per two gallons. Breeding? Start with at least a 15–20 gallon tank—it’s easy to get overrun with fry!

🛠️ TANK SETUP
For beginners, I highly recommend using a filter, heater, and light. I use hang-on-back or sponge filters, and heaters from Hygger and Fluval. I also love the Seaoura SR616 for beginner plant setups and the Hygger 957 for stronger lighting needs. Go for a rectangular tank for better swimming space. Live plants like Anubias, Crypts, Bacopa, and Hygrophila are excellent for cover and water quality—but artificial plants work too if you’re just starting out.

💧 WATER PARAMETERS
Keep the temperature around 20–28°C (68–82°F), ideally on the warmer side. Guppies like pH between 7.0 and 8.5 and thrive in harder water. If your water is soft, consider crushed coral, aragonite sand, or Seiryu Stone to raise hardness and pH. Fully cycle your tank before adding guppies! Ammonia and nitrite must be at 0 ppm.

🧬 GETTING HEALTHY GUPPIES
Genetic diversity matters. High-end strains can look amazing but are often fragile due to inbreeding. “Mutt” or “assorted” guppies tend to be hardier and cheaper. If buying online, avoid sellers who drop-ship. Look for ones who actually have the fish in-hand and ship quickly. Better yet—buy in person from trusted shops.

🍽️ FEEDING
Guppies are omnivores and not fussy. I rotate Fluval Bug Bites and Hikari Micro Pellets daily, and offer treats like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. I also feed Hikari Mini Algae Wafers for my shrimp—guppies love to peck at them too. Feed small portions twice a day; they’re grazers and will snack on detritus and algae.

👶 BREEDING & GENDER
Males have a gonopodium (thin anal fin), females have a triangular one. Females are larger, and can store sperm for up to 6 months! Even one female can fill your tank with fry. To control population, consider male-only tanks. I’ve run multiple male-only setups with minimal aggression—aim for at least 8 males to reduce dominance behavior.

🚫 AVOID OVERPOPULATION
No females = no babies! If you are breeding, have a plan for the fry. Check with local stores before you breed. Independent shops may take your extras—chain stores usually won’t. Fry need hiding spots like plants or decor to avoid getting eaten.

🤝 TANKMATES
Guppies do well with shrimp, snails, Endlers, and peaceful species that prefer harder water. But honestly? More guppies are often the best tankmates for guppies—colorful, peaceful, and active at all water levels. 🌀

🎥 I hope this helps you decide whether guppies are right for your tank and gives you a realistic view of what to expect. They’re fun, active, and full of personality—but getting healthy stock and keeping up with their breeding habits is key!
