Betta Color Changes Explained: My Real-Life Examples!

Have you ever noticed your betta fish changing color over time? In this video, I’m sharing the surprising transformations I’ve seen in two of my own bettas—Stitch and Marmalade—and explaining why this happens more often than you might think.

When I first brought Stitch home, he had a distinct white and red pattern. But just four months later, his coloration had deepened dramatically, with most of the white fading and vivid blue tones taking over. Marmalade, my current female betta, has also gone through a similar shift—her reds became brighter, and patches of blue developed across her body and head over a span of 146 days. These changes weren’t caused by stress, since both fish had already settled into their tanks when the shifts began.

One big reason for these changes is genetics—specifically, the marble gene. Sometimes called the “jumping gene,” this gene can cause a betta’s pigmentation to change unpredictably throughout its life. This is especially common in koi bettas and marble-patterned fish. You’ll often see posts on social media where a betta that started out red becomes mostly blue (or vice versa), looking like a completely different fish after just a few months. If you scroll through those timelines, the change is usually gradual but undeniable.

Another factor is simply maturity. Many bettas sold in stores are still juveniles, and like many fish species—such as guppies, medaka, and white clouds—they may not show their full adult coloration until they’re a few months older. I believe Stitch’s transformation was mostly a result of maturing, while Marmalade may also carry the marble gene.

So why does this matter? Mainly because the appearance your betta has in the store may not be the same six months down the line. That’s one reason I’ve stopped buying high-grade bettas. Stitch was my most expensive betta, and while he was beautiful at first, most of that pattern faded over time.

There’s also the issue of inbreeding in designer bettas. Tiff’s Fish recently shared a short TikTok talking about how her bettas now rarely live past 18 months, whereas they used to live four or five years. She thinks inbreeding could be the cause, and with her experience, it's definitely something to think about before spending extra on fancy strains.

Personally, I’m considering going with a wild-type betta for my next fish. Since they aren’t line-bred for extreme colors or tail types, they tend to be more genetically diverse and stable in appearance. What you see in the shop is often what you get—and that can be a good thing.

Thanks for watching, and good luck with your own betta fish journey!
